'The Gods Must Be Crazy' is a 1980 film, written and directed by Jamie Uys. The film is the first in 'The Gods Must Be Crazy' series of films. Set in Botswana and South Africa, it tells the story of Xi, a Sho of the Kalahari Desert (played by Namibian San farmer Nǃxau) whose band has no knowledge of the world beyond. The film is followed by four sequels, the final three of which were made in Hong Kong.

The film is a collision of three separate stories—the journey of a Ju/'hoansi bushman to the end of the earth to get rid of a Coca-Cola bottle, the romance between a bumbling scientist and a schoolteacher, and a band of guerrillas on the run.

Xi and his band of San/Bushmen relatives are living well off the land in the Kalahari Desert. They are happy because the gods have provided plenty of everything, and no one in the tribe has unfulfilled wants. One day, a glass Coke bottle is thrown out of an aeroplane and falls to earth unbroken. Initially, this strange artifact seems to be another boon from the gods—-Xi's people find many uses for it. But unlike anything that they have had before, there is only one bottle to go around. This exposes the tribe to a hitherto unknown phenomenon, property, and they soon find themselves experiencing things they never had before: jealousy, envy, anger, hatred, even violence.

Since it has caused the band unhappiness on two occasions, Xi decides that the bottle is an evil thing and must be thrown off of the edge of the world. He sets out alone on his quest and encounters Western civilization for the first time. The film presents an interesting interpretation of civilization as viewed through Xi's eyes.

We are in a unique time on the planet; humanity is now facing a crossroad. The choices we make today will affect our children for generations to come.

By coming together in our hearts, we can and will create the change we want to see in the world. Every day more people are awakening to understand that we must act responsibly and act now to create this change.

How do we begin to make this change with our world facing crisis on so many fronts: financial woes, famine, homelessness, perpetual wars, food shortages, exploitation and disease (to name only a few)? We do have a choice.

We are in the time of choice and human beings around the world are feeling a call to unite and make our voices heard and our actions count. People from the indigenous world to the political are beginning to step forward and speak of this change through action and choice. There are many indigenous groups, as well as different faiths and beliefs, now sharing prophecies regarding information about this special time on the planet. Within all beliefs there is a similar thread that gives us the same message: we must unite in our hearts in order to overcome the challenges we are now facing on the earth. What is The Great Gathering? It is the same message of many beliefs from around the world. The message is simple: now is the time for humanity to unite to create the one voice for the people of Earth. This Great Gathering will be in every country around the world; we will stand together and join our hands, our hearts and our voices. This will create the spark that brings light to the rest of the world and to humanity. All groups from all directions will join in this celebration of life, of nature, of humanity and all that is. Neighborhood groups, churches, friends, coworkers, families, corporations that are trying to be responsible, politicians trying to create change, religious leaders, eco-villages, farm associations, truckers, health care workers, humanitarian organizations, educators, laborers, dishwashers, peacekeepers, all races, religions and economic backgrounds (the list is endless) will come together as one in our hearts. Together we will be one voice and change will happen. In order to begin The Great Gathering we must lay the foundation for this event through our networks of friends and associates. Change starts with the individual taking responsibility. Please send this message to your friends and networks around the world so that once The Great Gathering becomes known around the globe we can then act and call on humanity to join us. Change and true unity comes from the heart and being humble in our service to the earth and others. We are all connected; this gathering is to remind us that our lives on this earth are a gift to be honored. We are all equal and we deserve to be heard. The Great Gathering gives us all a voice to say we want change and support change for our children. Through our hearts and unity we can make a difference. Let’s work on making this a reality in 2010—the year of change—by sharing this one idea. Together we will decide when The Great Gathering takes place. This is how it begins.... with you....... Please copy this and share it with your network so we can all be doing our part in the creation of a world focused on humanity, nature and living in balance with all of life. One Voice One People One Earth for The Great Gathering of Humanity Add your name to the list of participants willing to be responsible for our earth.

Fire on the Mountain : A Gathering of Shamans is a documentary about the connection between consciousness and nature, as embodied in the spiritual traditions of Indigenous Peoples, whose ecological metaphors of the sacred are so relevant to the modern world.

The film was co-executive produced by Michael O'Callaghan, President of Global Vision Corporation in London, and Sheldon Rochlin, President of Mystic Fire Video in New York. It was produced and directed by the award-winning filmmaker David Cherniack in Toronto, Canada.

A producer at the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) since 1980, his many documentaries include "Heart of Tibet: An Intimate Portrait of the Dalai Lama", and "Four Noble Truths" (narrated by Richard Gere).

We shot the project in 1997 at an historic 10-day gathering of shamans from five continents, who travelled to Karma Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist retreat centre in the Val Saint Hugon in Savoy, in the French Alps, to discuss their concerns with H.H. the Dalai Lama and high-level representatives of the world's religions.

This documentary embodies the wish of these Indigenous People - all traditional wisdom-keepers, shamans and medicine-women - who requested us to communicate their message to the world.

Cheyenne Symbol of the Universe Shield

The Cheyenne are a Native American nation of the Great Plains. The name Cheyenne, meaning “people of an alien speech,” was applied to them by the Sioux. But the Cheyenne call themselves Tsetschestahase or Tsistsistas, which translates as “beautiful people” or “our people.”

The Cheyenne Nation is comprised of ten bands, spread all over the Great Plains, from southern Colorado to the Black Hills in South Dakota. In the mid-1800s, the bands began to split, with bands choosing to remain near the Black Hills, while other bands chose to remain near the Platte Rivers of central Colorado. Currently the Northern Cheyenne live in southeast Montana on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. The Southern Cheyenne, along with the Southern Arapaho, live in central Oklahoma. Their combined population is approximately 20,000.

For the Cheyenne, the circle was an important symbol in spiritual, social, and political life. They perceived the universe as a circle with four directions, with time and life moving in circular cycles. The insides of their tepees, where family units lived, were circular, and the tepees themselves were arranged in a circle in the village.

A Cheyenne creation myth involves the four medicine arrows, given by the creator, Maheo, to Sweet Medicine, who became the prophet of his people. The Sacred Arrows, or Mahuts (Maahotse), were four arrows, two for hunting and two for war, kept by the tribe through the generations. It was believed that without the Mahuts there would be no Cheyenne tribe, so these four arrows were guarded in a special tepee by a society of Cheyenne men known as Arrow Keepers.

One of the most important Cheyenne ceremonies was the Arrow Renewal. In the Arrow Renewal, various bands of extended families came together for a four-day ceremony. Three ceremonial lodges were placed in the center of a circle of tepees: the Sacred Arrow Lodge, the Sacred Arrow Keeper’s Lodge, and the Offering Lodge.

Men performed various rituals in and among the lodges to renew the Sacred Arrows and the spirit of the tribe. The four sacred arrows were often carried into battle by a chosen warrior, bound to the stem of his lance.

The Sri Yantra

Yantra literally means loom, instrument or machine. In actual practice, a yantra is a symbolic representation of aspects of divinity, usually the Mother Goddess or Durga. It is an interlocking matrix of geometric figures, circles, triangles and floral patterns that form fractal patterns of elegance and beauty. Though drawn in two dimensions, a yantra is supposed to represent a three dimensional sacred object.

Although the yantra is primarily a meditation tool both for serious spiritual seekers as well as sculptors in the classical tradition, its shakti is also available to new seekers with sincere devotion and good intention. It is believed that mystical yantras reveal the inner basis of forms and shapes abounding in the universe. Yantras function as revelatory symbols of cosmic truths.

The Sri Yantra of Tripura Sundari is a yantra or mandala formed by nine interlocking triangles surrounding the bindu. Four of these triangles are orientated upright representing Shiva or the Masculine. Five of these triangles are inverted triangles represent Shakti or the Feminine. Because it is composed of nine triangles, it is also known as the navayoni chakra.

Together the nine triangles are interlaced in such a way as to form 43 smaller triangles in a web symbolic of the entire cosmos or a womb symbolic of creation. Together they express Advaita-ism or non-duality. This is surrounded by lotuses of sixteen petals, and an earth-square resembling a temple with four doors.

White Lotus Buddha

Tibetan Buddhists make use of a particular set of eight auspicious symbols, called Ashtamangala, or Eight Auspicious Symbols, in household and public art. (In Sanskrit "ashta" is 'eight' and "mangala" is 'auspicious')

The lotus flower is one of the "Ashtamangala." The lotus represents purity of body, speech, and mind, floating above the muddy waters of attachment and desire...the White Lotus especially so.

Buddhism is a dharmic, non-theistic religion, which is also a philosophy and a system of psychology. Buddhism is also known, in Sanskrit or Pali (the main ancient languages of Buddhists), as Buddha Dharma, which means the "teachings of the Awakened One."

Siddhārtha Gautama is the key figure in Buddhism. He was a spiritual teacher from ancient India and the historical founder of Buddhism. He is universally recognized by Buddhists as the Supreme Buddha of our age. The time of his birth and death are uncertain; most modern historians date his lifetime from 563 BC to 483 BC.

In Buddhism, 'a Buddha' is any being who has become fully awakened (enlightened), has permanently overcome desire or craving, aversion, and delusion, or ignorance, and has achieved complete liberation from suffering.

Dear Friends,

In previous sessions, we've made several very important points about the phenomenon of meaningful coincidence. First, we've stated that this phenomenon is highly significant. Although many people dismiss the importance in their lives, I believe this is because they lack the tools to think about it in any other way. For thousands of years in human history, striking coincidences were taken very seriously. They were seen as omens or messages from the gods.

They were carefully interpreted and profound meanings were derived from them.

In my opinion, the fact that we now regard coincidence as insignificant does not mean that our society is intellectually superior. It simply means that we have embraced one way of looking at the world to the exclusion of all others.

Our second point about coincidence is that it is not rare. It is not unusual. It is not an anomaly amid the workings of the world. On the contrary, the entire universe is built on an almost infinite number of incredible improbabilities. Perhaps the greatest of all these improbabilities is our own existence as human beings.

A third point is that meaningful coincidence has a direction. It is a process of manifestation, of unfolding - just as the development of a human embryo is the unfolding of a genetic destiny encoded in the DNA.

The word SynchroDestiny expresses awareness of a developing pattern in the events of our lives. Of course, SynchroDestiny is also more than just awareness. Awareness is not an end in itself.

SynchroDestiny also means understanding and participating in the process of meaningful coincidence. It means lending your attention and intention in order to bring the process to fruition.

When this happens, the result is a phrase that I've used many times in my books and lectures: the spontaneous fulfillment of desire in the field of infinite possibilities. Right now, I want to discuss the different categories of response that are open to you when you encounter a moment of meaningful coincidence. This will illuminate what I mean by the spontaneous fulfillment of desire in the field of infinite possibilities.

Suppose you suddenly encounter a synchronistic moment. Suppose you're at the public library, and for some reason you're thinking about how you would like to have a bit more spending money. Right at that moment, you take a book from one of the shelves, and a hundred dollar bill falls out. This actually happened to a friend of mine. What kinds of responses are open to you at a moment like that?

At one extreme, you can always say it's just a coincidence. It means nothing. It's amusing, but insignificant. You have another hundred dollars to spend and that's all.

On the other extreme, you might think that this is the most fantastic thing that's ever happened! This is going to change everything!

Maybe you think, "All I have to do is want something and it will appear! I'm going to the racetrack. I'm going to Las Vegas."

Of course, it doesn't really work that way. SynchroDestiny is not about waving a magic wand to gratify ego-based wants. It is about something very different - the fulfillment of intentions that exist at much deeper levels, and of desires that are based in spirit rather than ego.

Suppose you see a rose growing, and you want that rose. It will look really great pinned onto your jacket or your blouse. Should you pull the rose off the bush? If you do, that's just an ego-based action. It's obviously not SynchroDestiny. What if you look at the rose and at that very moment it falls off the bush? If that kindles a kind of ego greed in you, then that's not SynchroDestiny either. If you suddenly think you've become master of the universe, that's not what would be called a positive transformation.

Let's say you're admiring the rose, and you hold your hand under it, and then it just falls down into your hand. You think, "Something wonderful and beautiful just happened. It seems to be a kind of flowing together of what is in me and what is in the rose bush. It was unforced, but there was an intention present in me - and I'd like to know more about how this happened and what it means. I'd like to bring more of these moments into my life. I'd like to see where they lead me. I'd like to learn what they have to teach me."

This is the frame of mind that fosters SynchroDestiny. This is setting the stage for the spontaneous fulfillment of desire. Most people would call this a very spiritual point of view, but it's actually closely related to the insights of modern physics. In fact, making a sharp distinction between modern science and spirituality is a mistake.

Both points of view are interested in discovering the unity that underlies the apparent disconnections that surround us. Spirituality is based on the idea that there's more to life than meets the eye. Modern science is also based on this. In the twentieth century, science has taught us that a material world that seems solid and tangible is actually made up of mostly empty space and pure energy. Our physical bodies are really material expressions of light - and so is everything else. Our bodies are both receivers and transmitters of the light energy that is around us at every moment, and all of this happens completely outside our conscious awareness and perception. There are a great many other aspects of the physical world that you don't perceive, but they're all around you nonetheless.

Until you turn on a radio, you don't perceive the radio waves that can be transformed into classical music or the broadcast of a basketball game. It's amazing to realize that the empty space that we're in has more activity than anything that is solid. If you could eavesdrop on even a little pinpoint of space, such as between your index finger and your thumb, you'd see that the whole energy and information of the universe is present in that space. Every radio and television broadcast is happening there. CNN news is right between your thumb and your index finger. There are millions if cellular phone conversations in that space as well. All this information and energy - yet it does not interfere with any other information and energy.

The BBC, All India radio, radio messages from intergalactic space probes - it's all there but there's no interference because everything is in different frequencies. In a similar way, you see only light within the boundaries of certain wavelengths. You don't see ultraviolet light on one end of the spectrum, and you don't see infrared on the other side of the spectrum. Conversely, you do see color because you have learned to see it.

Color is not a property of light rays - color is a sensation in the human mind. When a certain wavelength of light stimulates your brain in a specific manner, you see the color red. The color red as it exists in the human sensory apparatus is not "out there" in anything like the same way. We say that a cape waved in front of a bull is red, but it is only red because we have learned to create red in ourselves. In other words, we perceive certain phenomena - like the color red - because we have learned to perceive them. We don't perceive other phenomena - like ultraviolet light or high frequency sound - because presumably they are outside the range of our perceptions - both those of the mind and those of the body.

We may have been taught that our mind only exists inside of our heads. In reality, our minds and our thoughts unite us with the universe in the same way that our breathing exchanges atoms between our bodies and the atmosphere. When you understand that, it will be the same kind of moment that Isaac Newton experienced when he saw that gravity moved the planets and an apple fell to the ground. It is a moment in which you see unity instead of fragmentation. It's a transforming event. I want these sessions to help you create that kind of moment many times over. I want you to see connections where previously you saw only unrelated fragments. I want you to be able to use those connections and transform your life for the better, just as the insights of the great scientists have transformed the world. This will certainly be a process of spiritual growth, but I would not describe it as mystical or even mysterious. It's simply a process of opening yourself to the truth.

Love, Deepak

Every year thousands of revelers get together dancing through the snaking roads of Mumbai on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva & Parvati. DJ Asad ( Free Atmah ) has heralded this yearly event since it's inception in 1999. DJ Whosane also joined in soon and with a little help from friends " Dance Ganesha " has become the unifying force for people from all walks of life dancing in synchronous to the psychedelic beat !

Music has always been the primary form of celebration and devotion through time immemorial. Every year, the DJ's Asad and DJ Whosane!, compose and mix tracks specially created for this event. The theme behind the compilations is that the music should not influence the mind but instead create a silence within each individual, facilitating a positive connection with the universe. It should preserve the sanctity and purity of the event and the Ganesh festival.

The music combines the ancient Indian sounds and rhythms with modern electronic fusion music that transcend all artificial boundaries, unifying the crowd with its spirit. Dj Asad believes that dance is a collective expression of music, where the dancer disappears and only the dance remains.

The music is without popular Hindi film lyrics, and breaks away from today's over-commercialized Bollywood and pop genre. It cuts across all barriers of age, religion, caste, gender, language and socio-economic status. People are unified by the innate spirit of music, which gives them the opportunity to collectively revel on the streets of Mumbai. The event happens only once a year, but the experience lasts forever.

This year 25000 people were present in the 3000 meter Trance Dance parade. Check out a video to the Dance Ganesha which happened on September 14th, 2008 here . The track in the background is this fantastic trance version of " Deva o Deva Ganapati Deva .. " I heard it for the 1st time and I loved it !

The truth is in here and the truth will set you free ! The world we're living in today is ridden with all elements of a chaotic side dish which we never asked for in the first place, yet we lap up all that's served, accepting the so called reality of the times as an unchangeable duality of life ! We say, there is Good and there is Bad ! We give power to the idea of WAR by accepting this illusion of an eternal battle of opposing polarities. We live in a world of words and meaning where the truth is sometimes clouded by the slick play of language and words. Reverse psychological patterns seen all around us, yet unnoticed by the preoccupied average human intellect chasing the material dream. We are all here for the same reason ... To Learn .... To Evolve ..... All the Evil done in the world are quite simply actions which are less evolving in nature ! Evil is not the equal opposite of Good as believed for many years now. It's a different path charted by some which takes one off course from the illuminating, enlightening nature of light, naively pursuing external power when the infinite lies within !

Our belief systems have been made so rigid that it takes a whole lot of rebelling and questioning everything that has been thrust onto us as policies, rules, guidelines and ridiculous laws curtailing our basic need for Freedom. The creation of duality and then a patriarchal system where justice can be served through fair trial is one of the greatest illusions which most of us find hard to see through .... You don't have to believe anything but what your inner self suggests. The only true authentic information lies in your DNA and speaks through the voice inside you ! We might have distanced ourselves from our inner voice to an extent by wrapping ourselves unknowingly in chemical straight jackets, however, it's never too late or impossible to get back to your spiritual roots and find the Oneness that runs through all of Creation !

Our world is One and it includes everything and everyone on this Planet. What affects one could well affect the rest of us and we all need to rise to the need of the hour, Unity ! This is a time for empowering the spirit as we are all equal and we are all leaders leading each other from time to time .... Our collective consciousness has the power to heal, to love and to coalesce all the separation as One Infinite Power of the Source ! Transcend the Duality of Good and Bad and merge as One Force in search of the Truth for it's only the truth of our true infinite nature that will set us free from the shackles of the long limiting paradigm of a patriarchal world. To be of service to others is to empower the self as we are all part of the same holographic reality, as we are all one ! Our clarity in the world today might be blurred by dark clouds of deception and darkness, but within us we carry an eternal flame to illuminate the darkness with beams of love and positive synergy ..... We are the World and we need all parts of us to merge as one indestructible, all transcending force of THE ONE .......

Hurricane Gustav manifested as tropical depression in the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday, the 25th of August and quickly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane with winds of about 90 miles (145 kilometers) an hour. As of today, the Category 4 Hurricane Gustav is lashing the US state of Louisiana with torrential rain and gale force winds Monday after forcing nearly two million people to flee. From the Alternative News Realm, this Hurricane like the one before is not so natural as widely believed !

This is a time when we should not overlook our ability to affect what's going on in our world and bring light to all the darkness that surrounds us ...

I received this letter from our Lightworker Family 21 hours ago and want to share it with all of you for when we are together we will make the difference......

Dear Lightworker,

This is not the normal email or newsletter announcement. I am sure
this email comes to you at a time of rapid change in your own life,
and I am sure you are aware of the many earth changes taking place
right now. The question we need to ask ourselves is Are we a Part of
the process? YES, and What Intention do we want to set for our growth
and evolution on this planet?. Does it have to come at the price of
great pain and suffering? No! It does not. I am not alone in having
received the guidance as to how we can assist in the birthing of this
new energy coming through the sun and earth at this time. You have
been called into assistance, in your own way, through your own
personal revelations and connectedness. This connection wanes, and
wavers from time to time, but ultimately it is we as the individual
conscious that we are, who must choose our place in the greater body
of humanity, the earth and the whole. That power some call God, that
all encompassing, omnipotent power that feeds and nurtures us all. We
have to align and recognizes our oneness. We have all received our
calling.. And I would like to you partake in this opportunity to
exercise your divine right, to shine your light in unison with
lightworkers all over the world.

As each of us are one, humanities pain is our own pain, our healing
is humanities healing, which in turn is earths healing. We know that
many of these earth changes are a part of the process, as the earth
channels the higher density energies flowing through her sacred
meridian grid, yet we are a part of that grid and a part of how that
energy is used and processed. Will it continue to come forth as
earthquakes and destruction, as hurricanes and tidal waves, or can it
serve a higher purpose?

I believe it can. And this is the crux of this message to you.
Hurricane Gustav, a Category 4 Hurricane is slowly moving through the
Gulf of Mexico. This is in close proximity to mainland USA, and we all
saw the effect Katrina, a Category 3 hurricane had on the region, how
it effected the most vulnerable people, the children, the mothers, the
fathers, and anyone else who could not afford to escape its path.

I want to ask you to join with me, in prayer and meditation. If you
do not have a regular practice of meditation or prayer, I am asking
you to start one now for this purpose, and in these prayers, I am
requesting that you to add your voice to mine, and ask that these
energies driving the hurricane be channeled into you to assist you in
your own spiritual awakening, to ask that these energies be channeled
into all willing lightworkers who are sharing in this prayer, so that
the destruction can be transformed into a blossoming of hearts and
minds. And that each of these meditators, each of these lightworkers,
carries that energy with them, like an invisible hurricane Mandala,
that can sweep through the consciousness of humanity where the real
purification is needed.

Ask of the earth, ask of God, ask of the Great Spirit, ask of
yourself and ask of the One for this to be fulfilled. Ask your guides
and spirit teachers to help you focused on this intent. Lets join our
hearts, minds and voices in this request, and take up a greater
responsibility in the well being of this planet and its people, no
matter how big or how small they may be. Please join me, please spread
the word.

Hosted at Lightworkers.org we have a public voice server anyone is
free to join and form group meditations to focus on this. I will be
incorporating it into my daily practice and spending twice the time I
usually do, giving twice the energy and twice the heart to this
matter. You are free to use the services of Lightworkers.org to
network and connect with others to help bring this about.

You can find a semi-live update of Hurricane Gustave here

Send it your waves of love, call its energy into your heart and ask
in sincerity for the above to be made manifest in your own powerful
words. You know what to do, you have everything you need. You are a
divine emissary of light.

Shine On !

((( Love Always )))

Adeon and the Lightworkers.org Team !

After my trance dance workshop at the beginning of “The Gathering of the Tribes” in Frankfurt this year over Easter, Roberdo asked me to write an article on trance dance for chaishop.com. Thinking about this for a long time, I decided eventually to try writing purely from my own perspective. Trance is difficult to write about. It is a very controversial subject. Trance states are non-rational; it is hard to be rational about them. So here are some of my thoughts about states of no-thought.

We all have a deep longing and need for ecstatic experience. We spend a great deal of our lives thinking, planning, talking, reading – being rational. Even when we take time off, we tend to fill it with activities where our brain waves are predominantly within the rational, thinking beta frequency range. The brain is like a complex muscle. While it needs to be exercised, it also needs and craves various forms of rest – but sleep alone is not enough.

During sleep, our brain wave frequencies fluctuate between deep sleep (delta) and dreaming (theta) with the associated periods of REM (rapid eye movement). This is a natural, unconscious process, vital to our survival. Studies have shown that even short-term deprivation of REM sleep seriously affects health. Whilst awake, we consciously determine our states of mind by what we do. We mostly limit ourselves, through the conditioning of competitive society, to the beta frequencies. We need a break, time out from concentration and rationality – we need to experience states of trance or ecstasy in our waking lives, as a balance to all that thinking.

There are many ways of inducing conscious trance states which slow the brain wave frequencies from the predominant beta, down to the relaxed, intuitive alpha, or even the theta frequencies which are associated with dreaming and deep trance. Meditation, chanting mantras, guided imagery, hypnosis, holotropic breathwork and tantric sex are some of the ways humans have developed over the ages, but perhaps the oldest of all is trance dance.

In many primitive societies, ecstatic dance rituals were of great importance and were practised extensively. I am sure that many of these ancient traditions have been lost but some are still with us today. The San or Bushmen of southern Africa still dance themselves regularly into ecstasy. The Masai of Kenya, the Bwiti of Gabon, the Gnawa of Morocco and the Sangomas (traditional healers) of South Africa all practice ritualistic trance dance. However, the practice is certainly not confined to Africa. Australian Aborigines, Sufis, Druids, Siberian shamans, the native peoples of North and South America all practise(d) some form of ecstatic or trance-inducing dance. Even in modern Europe, old trance dance traditions still survive. Among them are the Tarantella or spider dance of southern Italy, Spanish Flamenco and the Cornish floral dance with its Celtic roots.

A deep-seated longing for ecstasy, for a break in the tedium of day-to-day survival, has, I believe, led many of the younger generation in modern, industrial society back to trance dance. It is surely no coincidence that the drug most associated with the dance culture is known as ecstasy. Electronic dance music also reflects this association through the Goa or psychedelic trance genres. Twenty years ago hardly anyone had heard of house parties, even in Chicago where they first started. In that short space of time, a dance culture has developed and spread all over the world with its raves, techno or Goa parties. Using modern technology, young people are recreating a space in their lives for trance and ecstasy, with or without drugs.

It seems to me, that in this age of virtually unlimited information and communication, the experience of our ancestors, possibly dating from the stone-age, is re-awakening in us and urging us to dance ourselves into trance. It is not only in the dance culture that we find a renewal of interest in trance dance. There are many people who have written about it, some of whom are Felicitas Goodman, Gabrielle Roth and Frank Natale. There are loads of web sites about ecstatic dance, mainly in the U.S.A., with information and events of all kinds.

So what is trance dance? How can it lead to ecstasy and what is it good for? Here I am going to describe only my own personal experiences and observations.

When I am in a state of trance, I call it being in the flow. I don’t think about how to do anything or what I may be doing. I am the action. So, if I am dancing, I am the dance. It is hard to express. I might also say: it dances me. Thoughts, feelings and sensations come and go; they flicker through my mind and body like the lights that accompany me in the dance. My boundaries dissolve and I lose my sense of self – a drop of water falling into the ocean, becoming part of everything. “I” am no longer there; my tiny, separate self melts into the infinite, all-embracing “WE”. Time becomes elastic to the point of timelessness. This is sometimes blissful, even ecstatic; sometimes meditative and tranquil. Dancing is my meditation, my gateway to an altered state of consciousness which I need just as much as I need to think and function as an individual in society.

There are many shades of trance experience, varying from light to very deep. I can fall into a light trance whilst doing the washing-up – watching my hands as they work away, seemingly by themselves. It is a great way of making tedious jobs fun but trance dancing, for me, is the best fun of all. Far more than fun, it is deeply healing and rejuvenating. It strengthens my self-esteem while increasing my capacity for empathy. Regularly dancing myself into a state of ecstatic trance greatly reduces my tendencies to be irritable and depressed.

I am not young. I was born in 1949; so, as I write this in 2007, I am nearly sixty. Never too old to dance, I’m gonna bop till I drop. The younger generations of ravers and party-people in the dance scene richly deserve my thanks. They have made it possible for me to enjoy my passion for trance dance to an extent which was not thinkable before the arrival of electronic dance music, at least not in Berlin where I live. There aren’t many shamans practising ancient trance rituals here and it is a long way to the Kalahari where the remnants of the San still live and dance. The rock concerts and the discos I went to in the 1960s, 70s and 80s were not the ideal venues for trance dance. The music was not appropriate and the social constraints were far greater than at a rave.

Here in Berlin, I can go dancing every weekend to music which I have grown to love with people who are generally younger than my oldest son. These people always seem very welcoming towards me despite my deeply lined face. They are often amused to see me partying with my daughter who is 22. Unfortunately though, I am becoming more and more worried about these beautiful, young people.

It seems to me that the consumption of drugs has continually increased and broadened since the early 1990s when I went to my first techno party. Drugs have always been associated with the dance scene. Here we find another similarity with ancient, shamanic trance rituals where substances such as cannabis, psilocybin, peyote, ayahuasca, datura, iboga and Amanita muscaria are regularly used to help open the doors of perception and induce altered states of consciousness. The shamans, however, regarded these plants with great respect, to be taken sparingly and only mixed when they were known to be complementary, such as cocoa and psilocybin. But these days, in addition to higher dosages and far too frequent use, people think nothing of mixing all kinds of drugs at raves: for example, cocaine and/or speed with alcohol. High dosages of these antagonistic drugs taken together can produce a very dangerous cocktail. Apparently, many party people want to get “out of it” every weekend rather than “into the flow”.

By practising techniques which are simple to learn, it is possible to dance ourselves into trance with little, or no help from drugs at all. These techniques include de-focussing of thought and vision, careful, rhythmic hyperventilation combined with movement (used by both Sufis and San Bushmen in trance rituals) and grounding in the here-and-now. Together with the sensory over-load of appropriate music at high volume, light shows and the accepting club ambience, this can be a powerful and far more healthy cocktail for trance.

When many people dance together in trance, they experience a sense of community. This shared activity, which is a celebration of life, strengthens the bond of our shared humanity. The awareness of being part of a single, all-pervading consciousness helps us to empathise more deeply with one another – to be more accepting not only of others, but also of ourselves.

Fulfilling that longing for the ecstatic, transforming experience, trance dancing is remembering; like coming home to a wonderland where we all belong – one infinite, shared consciousness.
