Love ... is perhaps one of the most commonly misunderstood words among us humans. Language for most part falls short to convey the precise meaning behind what we feel emotionally, deep within our soul. We grow up learning love is something which is shared between people you care for. Aren't we capable of extending this feeling towards all ? Why is it so difficult to love everyone ... why do we feel like sometimes people don't deserve our love ? Perhaps the ones we don't show love towards are the ones who need it the most. Deep down you know this is true, yet we continue fighting our egos leading us down a path of sorrow and despair, which we try and hide behind momentary pleasures of the external world.

We fall in love, with fleeting moments of infinite joy which make our spirit soar high in sheer ecstasy as we gracefully unite with the seeming other. When two people or personalities are attracted to each other, it may be for various reasons which draw us closer to each other. These may simply be outer manifestations of our personalities which are bound to change and evolve with time. We sometimes mistake physical attraction for love and get all caught up in our self created hormonal deluge which only gratifies the desires of flesh, oblivious of the union of two souls, completely uniting as one. Aware of each others short comings and strengths ... sensing each others thoughts and feelings ... nurturing each other to grow and be better versions of themselves. This is what keeps two people in love ... sharing, allowing ... while being completely authentic about each others needs, with no secrets and lies hiding our own inadequacies which with time become evident anyway.

We are restricted by our limiting definitions of love which keep us trapped in our egoic consciousness, if there is such a thing. It's simply a lack of self awareness which seeks the other to complete us. Most of us 'fall' in love with an idea of love given to us through mass conditioning and propaganda. We foolishly 'fall' for outer appearances and the masks ... rarely listening to the universal language of frequency and vibration which speaks for itself. We can sense each others energies and we keep denying our innate abilities confusing it for paranoia or our wild imagination. Once you recognize yourself as a spiritual being ... or simply consciousness ... which permeates all creation, you lose the illusion of your separate identity, hence wake up to reality. In a relationship, its important to realize that its two souls who come together in order to heal each others wounds and help build an environment of compassion and understanding while envisioning the future together, growing and expanding always ... continually.

Sometimes we get stuck in certain ideas about love and struggle to free ourselves from its shackles as we continue to seek "love" from another. Someone who we feel will complete us ... physically, emotionally ... It may seem like it works, for a while, until life rearranges itself to bring about a new learning experience, in letting go off attachment and the need to control. Many couples who come together in love tend to get lost along the way and so does their idea of love, which goes right out the window ... because it was never based on a strong foundation, it was never a deep rooted spiritual connection. It can be wrecking to find oneself in a situation like this especially with children involved as it changes your world completely, sometimes quite dramatically. As Terence Mckenna said, "Nothing Lasts ... but nothing is lost."

In an ideal world, couples nurture each other all along, accepting each others light and dark side, while healing the parts which are wounded. What's wrong with the general idea of love in our reality is that people don't know themselves or love themselves enough to be able to accept another for who they are. With time things change and when people resist change it becomes uncomfortable. Some relationships were never built to last and crumble with time and its important to learn the necessary lessons from these relationships and move on bravely into the unknown, with love in our hearts. To love is not to be physically present with the one you love, always. Sometimes, you have to love and let people take their own roads while wishing them well, in hope that someday they will realize the truth for themselves.

I have been through similar challenges in my personal life lately and my own experience makes me share this realization with others who might be facing similar challenges in their lives. I am happy there is hope even in the darkest of times as we are being prepared for greater things to manifest on Earth and in our lives, in the time to come. By healing our own wounds and by letting go off our personal baggage we are in a way freeing the collective unconscious from its self limiting paradigms rooted in fear and separation. We all have great abilities to manifest in this lifetime, but first, we must endeavor to free ourselves from negative karma and let go off any extra baggage we might be carrying with us from our past. The only real relationship we have is the one we have with ourselves. We must be true to our selves and live the life we came here for. If we don't fit into this world, its because we came to create a new one and its time we start moving in that direction, one step at a time.

I came across this brilliant article by Jackie Lapin shared by an evolved soul on facebook ... maybe this will help you fix your relationship and heal your life in a way its meant to. Look forward ... while learning from the past mistakes.

People who are making the change to a conscious and spiritually-driven life often discover that they are yoked to someone who is not prepared to come along on that journey. The partner is mired in his or her own negative thoughts and emotions, and meets any topic of spiritual enlightenment, positive vibration and conscious creation with a wall of resistance. Don’t despair…lots of others have gone through this phase too, and come out on the other side with a happier life. Let’s look at what you can do in this situation:

• Stay in your positive vibration state. Don’t allow your spouse or mate to pull you out of alignment with the Universe. When you feel yourself drawn into it, take a walk, go play with the kids, read a book, go have lunch with your best friend… and continue to think and feel positive about yourself, your life and the good qualities in your partner.

• Create a sacred place in your home where you can go to meditate, clear your chakras, express gratitude, Consciously Create, connect with the Universe, —activities that keep your frequency high. Ask your partner to respect this private time, so that you can “recharge.” This recharging should continue to buttress you against his or her negativity.

• Demonstrate how your life has changed by just being happier, more upbeat, less stressed…and soon your partner may want to know what it is that has changed you and how he can he/she get some of it!

• By changing how you respond to things, your spouse is bound to have to adjust. If you are doing something different, that will change the dynamic between you and within the family. Your partner will have to adjust in some ways to meet or stay up with the new you.

• Visualize a harmonious relationship. See your relationship changing and your partner opening up to greater dialogue, a more open-minded attitude and a willingness to explore new avenues—new ways of thinking. Take your focus off of what is WRONG, and put it on what is right and what you desire.

• Throw your “love net” around him or her. I really believe this is an empowering tool to create waves of love that generate vibrational change. See yourself throwing the net of positive loving energy over your mate and yourself, so that it will allow him/her to release the negativity in a net of safety and acceptance. This raises vibration between the two of you, and floods him or her with your loving, positive energy.

• Each day of the week, spend five minutes telling your partner one or more of the things you love about him or her. Your partner will be delighted to hear praise instead of complaints! It may well begin to shift his/her expectations, mood and outlook.

• Focus on making the present moment the very best and most enjoyable you can and vision for the future. Release the past. Don’t reintroduce old patterns, hold him or her to past behavior by bringing up how it’s been previously, and make sure that you don’t fall back into old negative repetitive interactions yourself. Let go of the anticipation that your partner will respond in “the same old way.” Leave the door open for change and possibility. Create a new pattern of interaction through your change of emotions, thoughts and energy habits.

• Present your partner with positive alternatives. When he or she focuses on the negative, gently demonstrate what alternative thought, emotion or perception may further his or her desire. Be a teacher, but do it gently, don’t force-feed these concepts.

• Become a Master Manifestor. As you raise your frequency, good things will increasingly come to you at your beckoning. If your spouse or partner gets jealous, point out that he/she can do this too if he/she follows your path. Then hand your partner a copy of The Art of Conscious Creation!

• Accept that the Universe is creating an opportunity to test how effectively you can maintain your own positive energy in the face of a challenge!

• Lastly, and this is the most extreme outcome, if you have tried all of these over time and you find yourself in a situation that is not emotionally healthy for you, you may have to leave the relationship. It is when the negatives outweigh the positives, with little prospects for change, that you have a responsibility to your ebullient and joyful soul to find an alternative lifestyle either alone or with a more positively disposed and spiritually aware partner. Remember, even when there are children involved, they fare better with at least one happy parent, rather than two miserable ones.

In most ancient spiritual cultures and mystery schools, the role of tantra, or sacred sex, was understood as vital to spiritual awakening. Today numerous spiritual traditions still practice tantra. In the hieroglyphics of the Luxor Temple in Egypt you can still find symbolic depiction of sexual initiation. Mayan elders speak of sexuality as what orbits the planets and stars and connects us to the Milky Way and the universe. The Incan acknowledge the entire second stage of their mystery school as that of developing sacred sexuality in which both partners lovingly assist one other in moving toward "Christed consciousness." Buddhists, certain Hindu sects, ancient Essenes, and others also hold sacred sexuality as key to their paths. The Dolphin Star Temple Mystery School, of which I am the founder, divides its teachings into three primary stages. The first is awakening your Ka: ego transcendence, adapting a spiritual identity, and embodiment of your Higher Self. The second stage is awakening your Ba: healing and awakening of your soul through tantric sexuality. The third stage is awakening your Mer-Ka-Ba: union of your Higher Self and soul into your multidimensional hologram as held in place with sacred geometry.

As you begin to understand the indispensable relevance of right use of sexual energy to spiritual awakening, the focus turns inward to, "What can I do to make myself capable of and available for this aspect of awakening?" Some of those who practice tantra today have forgotten the major keys for this aspect of awakening which are surrender, love, and sacredness. There are those who practice tantra who have omitted these ingredients while doing all the techniques accurately. The end result will eventually be the attainment of power that is devoid of surrender to love and sacredness. And I believe we have enough history behind us to understand the dangers implicit in such attainment.

To assist you in further understanding sacred sexuality and its connection to your soul's awakening, I would like to offer the following channeling from one of my books. Archangel An-Ra is a feminine Light Being who is a member of the Pleiadian Archangelic Tribes of Light. She and other Pleiadian Archangels have long been involved in the spiritual teachings and mystery schools of Egypt, Lemuria, many Native American Tribes, the Maya, Inca, Hindu, and many others. The rest of this article is a channeled excerpt from The Pleiadian Tantric Workbook: Awakening Your Divine Ba, published by Bear and Co. of Santa Fe, New Mexico, copyright 1997.

An-Ra speaks: Beloveds, I am most grateful for the opportunity to speak to you ...and to bring you a wondrous story of creation, sexuality, and the awakening of your soul to its full potential and glory. You see, in truth, it is impossible to speak thoroughly about any of these three subjects without speaking of all three. The beauty of creation is that it involves all aspects of existence, as symbolized microcosmically in your body and consciousness.

Beyond this lifetime, or all of your lifetimes, there is an ongoing eternal wave of Creation. You see, in the beginning was the word, and the word was, "I Am." From Oneness, in a deep state of silence and peace, came the awakening to its own existence: "I Am." Within that Oneness, or Divine Source existed infinite possibilities. And each of us is one of those possibilities. Original Creation began when Oneness next thought, "If I exist, what else exists?" Then the division of Oneness into two birthed the first cosmic twins, Holy Mother and Holy Father. Their first experience of each other was one of awe, wonder, and loving adoration. This impulsed them into a spontaneous blending into Oneness again, and was what you might think of as the first tantric union. From that point, they began to birth possibilities, beginning with the Elohim and Archangels. From these Light Beings was birthed all of existence. And original Creations were all conceived and birthed in deep love including your own. And the impulse for union and Creation was always love and adoration and wanting to be One with the Beloved other.

Now we come to the part about human creation, conception and birthing. Needless to say, because of the nature of your birth experience coming through your mother's womb, the energy with which you were created, or conceived, will determine greatly your experience of yourself. Anything less than innocent love and adoration between parents at the time of conception, gestation, and birthing sets karmic patterns in place to be worked out in that life time. And you choose parents who will anchor the specific karmic patterns you need to transcend. If your mother felt ashamed of having sex, even with her husband, and your father was having pornographic fantasies instead of loving your mother and being present with her, these energies were imprinted on your soul as you entered your body at birth. Your initial imprint of male/female relationships, your own inner male and female aspects, and your relationship to your mother and father and to the world all come from the energy between your parents at the moment of conception. Was your mother relieved that your father was finally through? Did she feel like weeping but held the tears back instead? Or did she fake an orgasm in order to secretly have a sense of secret power over him? Did your father roll over, mumble good-night, and try not to look at your mother so he could hold onto his pretend fantasy in which the porno damsel was swept off her feet by his amorous and ardent love-making? Did he resent your mother for not responding that way? Or did he hold a double standard of thinking it vile for a woman to enjoy sex, while secretly fantasizing himself as an incredible lover that no woman could resist? Or perhaps you were fortunate and had parents who were healthy sexually and really loved each other.

Without healthy sexual attitudes and experiences, it is impossible to give birth to awakened, fully healthy children. Without male and female equality, love, adoration for one another, trust, respect, and shared innocence, full communion with Oneness is impossible as are peace, freedom, and joy. The lust-seduction control games; sexual attitudes of distrust, shame, lovelessness, and separation; as well as lack of spiritual presence during intercourse are literally destroying your soul's ability to experience wholeness and health in the third dimension. You see, your soul is directly impulsed by all sexual experiences whether loving and satisfying, or otherwise. If you are on a spiritual path, meditating regularly, clearing your emotions, healing your past lives, and seeing the finest of healers, you will still only be able to attain to an unsatisfactory level of spiritual awareness and wholeness if your sexual energy is not moving freely, fully, and lovingly through your body and soul. You need not have a partner in order to experience this, but your gendered relationships, both internal and external, must be balanced and healthy.

...What you call sexual energy, or sexual expression, is the stuff of which existence is both made and sustained. When a couple in love experiences total surrender one to the other during a heightened sexual experience, they become blended into a single consciousness containing equal parts male and female. The original experience of Oneness, or God, awakening to its own existence, and responding, was , "I Am," meaning, "I exist." That experience led to Oneness individuating its own male and female halves, then blending them into Oneness again. A rhythm or union, individuation, union, individuation was set in place, and cosmically, has continued ever since. So is the sacred function of your sexuality intended to bring about the same ecstasy and experience of Oneness as the original awakening of existence.

The female vulva is a geometric gateway to the cosmos. The vagina is the spiraling passageway through which a person must travel in order to enter the womb, which is the microcosm of the egg of existence. As the egg is "hatched," or fully activated, energy and consciousness move directly through another spiraling tunnel or passageway to the woman's soul. From the woman's soul the energy and light of love is sent out in waves back to her partner and through existence simultaneously. These waves are like ripples on water, only holographic. They are like bubbles expanding in wavelike motion as opposed to ripples on a flat surface. These waves create a blending of the soul of the woman and her partner. The love and ecstasy created by their union is transmitted through a spiral passageway down through the male's body into his prostate which further excites his penis to transmit the love, adoration, and joy energies passionately into the woman's vagina. This cycle is repeated in a continuum once both the male and female have totally surrendered to giving and receiving love and relinquishing all control. The two become a microcosm of the macrocosm of existence. They spin the galaxies together, hold planets in form, spiritually activate one another's souls and spirits through the dimensions, and heal each other and all of existence: and all while having a great time! Sound easy? Ideally yes. But your world has made it very complicated.

Trust and respect have been so long lost that you spend more time testing one another, making each other prove yourselves, finding reasons to doubt each other, and vying for control than you do creating and enjoying your love relationships. And these things you call love relationships are often little more than addictive pain patterns being acted out. Love does not need to possess, control, degrade, withhold, prove anything, distrust, or conquer. Love simply loves. It flows. It is uninhibited, uncontrived, natural, innocent, and spontaneous. And while discernment is needed in the selection of a partner, it need not prohibit you from loving everyone. Did you know that humans are terrified of feeling the totality of unconditional love? You have been taught to restrain yourselves lest you make a fool of yourselves. You have been taught that it is impossible to love fully without hurting if the other person does not return your love and promise to stay forever. Without 100 percent guarantee that you will not "lose," you hold backxa little or a lot. It does not really matter how much. The point is that the flow has been dammed and therefore controlled.

What if love were only possible by forfeiting all guarantees? What if love could only exist in the presence of surrender? What if there were no such thing as loss, only change? What if you had to let go before the other person did without knowing whether he or she will ever let go or not? You would risk disappointment; but that is all. If you have healthy self-esteem and self-love the person you love cannot devastate or humiliate you. He or she cannot make you feel unworthy; only you can! The object of love is not to win someone over, break through their barriers, make them need or desire you, or make sure you don't lose. The object of love is to love, to cherish, to honor, to adore, to respect, to never harm, to appreciate and never depreciate another. You can even love without objectification. This is the nature of your true being, your soul, your spirit. To experience love for no apparent reason and for no ulterior motive is a great sign that you are nearing completion of your trials and karmic pain. It is the way home to your true self. In the meantime, allowing yourself to objectify love is a step in the right direction. To fill your life with friends and/or a partner who naturally inspire you to love is a wonderful thing. To surround yourself with sacred objects of beauty, to live in a place you enjoy, to be in nature regularly, to do what you really like to do are all important ingredients in life that can help you become a more loving person. To be in relationships with people with whom you do not resonate in order to try and learn to love them is not the quickest way to work out your karma. It may show you your patterns, at best. But to remain in a relationship that is all struggle and resistance can harm you and your partner. Everyone, and all of creation, deserve to be loved and adored. If you are with someone whom you cannot love and adore with all your heart, it will serve you both more to separate than to remain together. I am not speaking of a strong, loving relationship that temporarily goes through a rough period. I am speaking of relationships in which one or both of the people involved are in resistance and unhappiness more often than notxonce the honeymoon phase is over. You see, when the honeymoon phase ends, relationships are intended to deepen. The honeymoon may be fun and inspirational, but it does not contain the depth that long-term loving, supportive relationships do.

When the love, trust, and surrender between two people in love are strong, either or both partners can go through difficult times of emotional healing, job stress, or problems with friends and other family members without affecting the bond in the relationship. If you are in a relationship with someone you love, and about whom you deeply care, to support them in the rough times as well as the easy times will be natural and fulfilling. If you are, however, in a relationship chiefly because the other person makes you feel good about yourself, fulfills your sexual fantasies, and makes life better for you, then when your partner is experiencing pain or difficulty you will feel abandoned, neglected, and unhappy and you will probably blame your partner for it. In order for a relationship to have any chance of bringing about true intimacy and sustainable love, you must deeply care about your partner and his or her life, feelings, and well-being, and be moved to want to give freely and lovingly to your partner.

This type of relationship foundation is imperative in order to have the relationship be an augment to your spiritual path and that of your partner, and to achieve the type of sexual union that brings about healing and awakening of your soul. The essential nature of the unrestrained soul is tantra. This leads to being in a constant orgasmic state in your whole body. In this state, energy blocks are dissolved, emotions released to flow naturally, and spiritual experience of love and Oneness are the norm. And it is what you and Earth most need at this time ...As always, our intention is to make your process of awakening as loving, effective, and gracious as possible while facilitating a deepening within yourself with yourself, others, and Oneness. ... Ecstatic tantric love returns you to Divine Flow and enlightenment.

Many of us who find ourselves on a spiritual path, living from a place of conscious awareness are now going through what some call 'The Dark Night of The Soul', which is a term to describe a difficult or challenging period in ones life when all aspects of being which seek healing come to the fore ... many layers of illusions which keep us trapped in a materialistic reality have to be shed. For some it may be a relationship which has for long been on the rocks because both partners seem to view the world and reality from different lenses and some find it difficult to keep up with the other's spiritual growth and progress because they find hard to let go off their old selves. We all have masks, lets face it. How attached we are to these masks and how real we consider the mask to be, differs from person to person. The mask which some call our ego tells us we are separate, an individual entity experiencing life. Its through the experiences life has to offer we learn certain necessary lessons for our spirit to grow and evolve, if only we are paying enough attention.

As an Empath or a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) we are at times challenged by life's circumstances to whether acknowledge our gifts in a largely insensitive world or just ignore them as mere figments of our own imagination. We subdue our true nature by giving in to the ways of the world. Since so many people are doing it, must be right ... and what harm can possibly come from it. We don't exactly understand the universal law of karma, cause and effect. Life can become a difficult proposition if you have to share it with someone who doesn't understand the way you see the world and with time things do change, as we let go off our illusions one by one. Earth is going through tremendous changes and these changes affect us as well, as we are all connected in the larger scheme of things.

We may not know this but we will, in our waking lives be witness to some of the greatest moments of our lives as we birth a new era of higher consciousness on this planet. For those of us who choose to remain rooted in a fear based dualistic paradigm, they will stay back as that's what they intended to create for themselves. And for those of us who have the courage to step outside our own fears and self limiting belief systems, we will be co-creating a new world of peace, love and harmony among all beings and lifeforms who are able to shift their own vibrational frequency to match their living environment. We are finally connected in the infinite web of life, swimming in the ocean of infinite consciousness. There is no right or wrong. Only choices, and with each choice we either move closer to self realization or get further away.

These challenging, soul testing times are what we decided to go through once we chose to come to Earth school. No exceptions. The dark night of the soul we are going through is giving us a chance to shift the course of our life towards a more harmonious way of being. In this process there will be many painful endings which will also mark sparkling new beginnings ... Here are somethings about the dark night of the soul which will probably help you gain some insight about some of the things you might be going through too ... Mitakuye Oyasin ... We are all one, family ... :)

"Dark night of the soul" sounds like a threatening and much to be avoided experience. Yet perhaps a quarter of the seekers on the road to higher consciousness will pass through the dark night. In fact, they may pass through several until they experience the profound joy of their true nature.

Many seekers would encourage the dark night experience if they knew what it was. However, to one engaged in the dark night, suffering seems unending.

The dark night occurs after considerable advancement toward higher consciousness. Indeed, the dark night usually occurs like an initiation before one of these special seekers is admitted into regular relationship with higher consciousness. The dark night also occurs to those who do not seek relationship but immersion or unity in the higher consciousness. While the term dark night of the soul is used broadly, its general meaning — in the field of higher consciousness — is a lengthy and profound absence of light and hope. In the dark night you feel profoundly alone.

You Can’t Fit In

The dark night usually develops this way:

You, as a genuine seeker, have gone through many significant phases as you progress toward higher consciousness. Your faith is strong. You have kept loyal companionship with fellow seekers and perhaps you have already found a special teacher. You’ve experienced indications of the reality of higher consciousness and yearn to be more deeply in communion with it. You see the principles of a higher power at work in your life. Yet, all in all, you find yourself somehow painfully on the outside. You feel caught between your old way of living, your old tendencies and associations, and this nebulous, unreachable realm of higher consciousness.

You feel an exile in both places. You don’t belong in the old pastimes, in the old empty or numbing way of life, yet you somehow can’t fit in or feel at home in the fellowship of those who talk naturally of the higher consciousness and its reality. They are experienced, they are absorbed in it. They are loving, giving people. But you are unable to live, with full heart and mind, the way they do. They’re able to apply the principles of higher consciousness easily, yet it’s so hard for you. They have manifestations and proofs on a regular basis. You only stretch like a human mule after a receding corncob while pulling the heavy weight of your old tendencies behind you.

You try to be good, and often you can’t. You try to be loving and find at times your heart is hard like stone. Sometimes your projects fall down around your ears. You keep struggling and still you don’t break through. You understand the path is one of joy and yet your life seems to have been barren for a month or two, perhaps longer. Where did that early joy and zest go?

Hanging On

Up to this particular time there was joy, there was delight. But now there is only a hanging on, a dogged hanging on. You persist because you can’t conceive of going back to your old way of life. That seems impossible now. That would be like going to prison, living as if with a transorbital lobotomy.

You deeply want to have joy and fulfillment, easily manifest prosperity, but something’s not working. You don’t know what it is but something’s awry, and your meditations have lost their luster. Sometimes, during rare meditations, you do experience brief moments of peace. Your agonizing mind and heart rest from their turbulence and even these fleeting times of calm are so deeply appreciated. Your light dance of life, which had gone on for some time, is now a trudging in what seems a devastated and alien land.

Your fellow seekers look at you and show their concern. Their words of kindness are valued but you feel you’re somehow incapable of responding well. Your heart is numb. At these times your friends try to cheer you up. They invite you to dinner. You seem to perform fairly well, despite the emptiness you feel inside. What else is there to do? You wonder if you have any right to be in their fellowship at all. You think of leaving town, but where would you go? What good would diversion be?

A number of your friends in the fellowship of this great path know what you are going through for they have been through it themselves. They feel the main thing to do is encourage you to go on. They know if you keep it up and do not quit you will succeed. They know if you quit you will be a self-reject and will return to the old life, forever a foreigner, being neither at home with it nor at home anywhere else. They recognize that your own higher self, out of love, is lifting you up into its embrace.

They see you are being drawn into your dark night because:

1. your inner potential has great stature
2. your crusty, old ego requires you go through the dark night in order to be transformed.

You Feel Totally Alone

Other seekers, for various reasons, do not have to pass through the dark night. However, the dark night is your way.

Your night is a very difficult time. While others may one day envy you for the marvelous growth you experienced in such a short, intensified period, you will, because of the pain of your experience, always feel profound compassion for those whom you one day see going through a similar night.

Being caught between the old way of life and the new possibilities, your sense of alienation intensifies. Your sense of inadequacy and not knowing what to do next becomes gnawingly constant. You feel you would do anything to get out of this state, yet it is only your ego which is keeping you in it. However, this insight is impossible for you to grasp while going through your long night.

And you feel so totally alone. Sure, you have friends and you appreciate them, but you are keenly aware they are not capable of feeling what you are feeling or knowing what you are going through. Sometimes they seem like clowns, sometimes they seem empty-headed, caught up in meaningless pursuits. They do not understand, you think, how much you are suffering or how you cry out and pray deep into each midnight. You try their advice but it doesn’t seem to touch the heart of the matter.

You begin to enter the dark night in earnest when you feel completely stranded. In the fullness of the dark night you don’t know where you are spiritually. You’re separate from God and man. You do not know where to turn. Your friends love you and wish you well but your condition does not improve.

The dark night is a very private matter. The person in the dark night is generally able to function quite well despite inner suffering. Often your acquaintances never suspect that you are going through the dark night — they probably do not even know what it is. Only people close to you — especially friends along the path — can recognize your pain.

You feel like a hollow person doing the activities of life with no motivation except expediency. Your eyes seem deeper in your head. You are profoundly aware of the suffering of humanity and the cruelty of one person to another. You feel that cruelty and negativity far outweigh love and constructive action.

You Enter Midnight

Alone, and not wishing to be, unable even to express yourself to others, you enter midnight and the greatest intensity of the dark night. Here you have finally come to the time of sovereign solitude. In this precious time, which has no apparent prospects of love or happiness, you clearly perceive that nothing in the outer world has proven adequate to heal your condition. Nobody, not even your dearest friends and loved ones, can make you whole. Even if they have tried, and love you enough to try loving you forever, they can’t give you peace.

You eye your books and consider all the benefit you have gained from these extremely wise vessels of truth. Yet not one book, not one thought, goes deep enough inside you to where the affliction abides.

You look at your possessions, your money container. No material thing has been able to help you. No material means have worked. Nothing, no one, in the outer world has enabled you to come out of this dark night.

In your loneliness, you next — in a seemingly random process — notice that none of your thoughts have proven adequate to your suffering. Not one — even repeated fifty thousand times — breaks the inner storm and lets in light. God and higher consciousness seem so far away that perhaps they are unreal. Neither one has, despite your protracted exposure of yourself, done anything to ease or remove your agony. Nothing appears efficacious. Nothing works.

Clearly, there is nowhere to turn. There is nothing to be done. All actions you considered have been tried. There is nothing to think, nothing to feel, nothing to do, nowhere to go. It seems you have to accept this defeat — or, you can persist in struggling against it. For awhile longer, you go about thinking, feeling, and doing other options that occur to you. But you realize in the midnight of your soul that you have tried every option you know of.

The Peace Comes

Helpless, totally helpless, as well as ever so alone, you abide in this condition. And you accept your predicament. You accept that there is really, except for a murmured prayer to a remote Lord and a remnant of a shredded faith, nothing else left.

Suicide would be absurd. Suicide would be an act of arrogance and vanity. You have grown far beyond such primitive responses to your private agony. No, nothing to do. Nothing remains in this lonely helplessness. There is, without question, nothing you can do.

You abide. You accept your state. How have you gotten to this place? That’s insignificant. Musings and feelings aside, you wait. You feel you may have to stay this way forever, doing the regular day-to-day things, but in this mood of emptiness. Nothing. Nothing.

Then, it happens. A holy presence comes into your room — sweetly, softly. You feel it filling you. Your mind is filled with mellow or bright light. Your heart, your still heart, is permeated with peace. This peace moves through your body like a cold spring of mountain water. It flows in your spine, your brain, and under your skin. Everywhere.

Also, this presence, this comforter, moves like a breeze across your arid mind and numb heart. Then, or a few days later, the fire of joy begins to smoulder. Here, abiding with nothing more to do, your ego drops away! Your ignorant, arrogant, fearful sense of self falls away from you. You stand in light — a new being, a free being — transformed.

Your Ego Sense

Believe it or not, that’s what the dark night is all about: transformation. Your ego, your limited sense of self, your inadequate complex of ideas about who you are had to be dissolved. Your ego was, you begin to see, eclipsing higher consciousness and your true nature. Your old sense of self was inadequate to your new hopes and proper state. Your suffering intensified because of a major misapprehension. You were too used to thinking of yourself based on inputs from your previous experiences in life. On and on through life, you gathered information and responses from the world which indicated to you what kind of person you were and are. These superficial units of related inputs became integrated in what is called the ego — your sense of self, your sense of who you are. As long as you allowed this inaccurate or only partial sense of who you are to dominate, you could not know or abide in your true nature.

Your ego sense is so powerful — you invest it with so much of your thought and feeling — that your attitudes of life become based on an egocentric perspective. The ego gains a progressively greater foothold on your entire life because your basic attitudes about your existence and essential nature are strongly linked with ego.

Then, your ego sense, due to your suffering or your limitations in life, wants to have more power over circumstances and a more pleasant life. The ego sense often becomes motivated to seek higher consciousness and, thus, greater ability to dominate in life. Not always, but often, it is the ego sense which most eagerly pursues higher consciousness. It wants to be in charge; it wants to manipulate events and make life come out more to its satisfaction. But, as long as your ego dominates, it is on a collision course with your true nature and your higher consciousness. There’s going to be a showdown. There has to be a confrontation sometime if your higher consciousness is ever to emerge, if you are ever to know truly who you are and what your human capabilities are.

Furthermore — and this is extremely important, especially in understanding the dark night of the soul — your ego, as it develops from childhood onward, has the conviction that it is the doer. Generally, your ego assumes that it chooses what your mind will think, and chooses what your heart will feel. It feels it selects the various actions and activities you are going to undertake. Your sense of self, being convinced it is the doer, feels it accomplishes anything and everything in your life. Do you see, then, how the dark night develops? A false sense of self has been ignorantly and manipulatively standing in the way of enlightenment.

Additionally, until you are consolidated in higher consciousness, your ego can return and reestablish control if you let it. Sometimes when you’re fatigued or when you have special, new opportunities in life, you are vulnerable to the reestablishment of your ego and its opinion that it is in charge of doing everything. It will again eclipse the higher consciousness until you recognize what has happened. Then you must courageously and consciously reaffirm your true nature, and deal with the upstart, old ego. Otherwise, another dark night phase will again develop.

Attempts of the Ego

A person seeking higher consciousness is, in effect, and with intensity, seeking the transformation of his own ego. He is seeking to end the tyranny of the ego and abide in his true nature, instead of a false nature concocted through experiences and emotional inputs during the process of life. While it is true these inputs have a value in subjecting you to new experiences and so offer unique learning situations, they often give you a delusory sense of self. You are not your mistake. Even a murderer can change and become a new being.

Still, as you progress toward higher consciousness, your ego may not be humbling and daily transforming itself. You may, instead, have a highly developed ego which is sure that it is causing the events of higher consciousness to unfold bit by bit. Your ego, after all, can be very interested in the attributes of higher consciousness, in meditation and association with enlightened beings. Your ego feels gratification and satisfaction in moving on down the road toward higher consciousness.

Your ego may also have the opinion that, because of its grasp of matters, it will one day establish or — by its thought process and feelings —bring about enlightenment and awakening. It is convinced that it will achieve higher consciousness. This is ironic because by the time of the dark night, the ego is the main obstacle; it is the obstruction of the light of consciousness. It stands between you and your fulfillment. In fact, the length of your dark night is based on the truculence and cunning of your ego. It can fight a very lengthy battle if it fears it’s going to be destroyed or will have to give in to something so much greater than it knows itself to be.

Incredibly, your ego wants to be in on the act of enlightenment. Ego wants to bring about higher consciousness by its own dramatic means. Certainly, it doesn’t want to be granted fulfillment by a power outside of itself. Convinced that it is the doer, your ego holds on for dear life — until that event called the dark night of the soul, when your ego awakens to the profound fact it cannot cause or bring about higher consciousness.

Ego cannot, by its will or any other skills whatever, create the wholeness of heart which will end your deep suffering. In a sense your ego recognizes itself — in the dark night — to be the disease. It recognizes that its foothold on your mind and heart has, at an advanced stage on your path, proven a great numbing agent and a high stone wall against the light. Ego stands against the fulfillment of your faith and the realization of your profoundest yearnings. Finally your ego has found something it cannot do and, in the dark night of the soul, it becomes totally convinced it is inadequate. It cannot deal with your suffering or the fulfillment of the heart’s yearning. Nothing it can do, think, say, buy, or travel to, will in any way suffice.

Dawn of a New Life

Here in this dark night, the lifelong ego sense dies: impotent. Having fulfilled its part, now weak and incompetent, it is dissolved — transmuted. From a higher sense now awakening within you, you slough off your false sense of self. You now know yourself to be a different person than you thought you were. Your ego was merely experiencing some of the attributes, some of the qualities, of your true nature, while at the same time obstructing others.

You, in passing successfully through the dark night, enter the realms of higher consciousness. You’ve been cleansed of the most deep-rooted sickness: your ignorance of your true nature and your inadequate, often totally wrong opinion of who you are. You now cease your inner conflict and abide serenely in your true nature. The night is over. The dawn of a new life in higher consciousness transforms your bleak life of the past few months into one with a heavenly nature. You have been delivered of the intolerable bondage to ego.

Henceforth, you will walk the earth seeing others afresh, living a new life, and abiding in your true nature. You have become a son or daughter of higher consciousness. Now your words and actions will be attuned with your true self. Now you express inspiration and comfort.

The dark night has passed. It is over.

The word Entheogen means God contained within and in some other translations it means to awaken the divine within, which is closer to the word Entheogenesis, describing the process of doing away with all that which is transient and impermanent, while allowing the unchanging aspect of our being to awaken to itself. An Entheogen is a compound that induces a spiritual or mystical experience. There have been many kinds of Entheogens or plant based psychoactive substances used by humans. However, there isn't much known about these plant medicines commonly, as a result of which humanity has been for long exploited by psychological manipulation at the hands of the powers that be. Constant repetition of lies and negative propaganda seem to be working well on the sleeping masses, however with more information and awareness on these subjects things are quickly changing globally.

It is good to see great change manifesting when people join hands and come together against this regressive oppression and tyranny that act out through the various world governments, big greedy corporations and the Military Industrial Complex. One of the ways to beat the system is through creating more awareness ... by disseminating useful information, sharing knowledge ... speaking your truth and more importantly, living it ! We came across this brilliant source of information on various drugs and their effects on human consciousness and thought it must be shared here ...

In 2010 I was fortunate to be a presenter on the subject of entheogens at a fascinating conference in San Rafael, California, titled “Beyond the I… the end of the Seeker’. The conference organizers had recruited a remarkable collection of physicists, neuroscientists, consciousness researchers, and spiritual teachers, all with a common interest in what turned out to be the rather hazy subject of ‘Science and Non-Duality’. (I say that I was fortunate to present because I was also able to attend workshops and lectures with some of my personal heroes including the physicist/authors Peter Russell, Amit Goswami, NASA’s zero-point scientist Bernard Haisch, anesthesiologist Stuart Hammerhof on his and Roger Penrose’s theory of Quantum Consciousness, and a remarkable presentation by Nassim Haramein exclusively on his paper about the Schwarzschild Proton). The entheogen section of the conference — titled ‘Entheogens as a Portal’— was a panel comprising of Rick Doblin (MAPS), Dr. Martin Ball, James Fadimann, myself and a couple of other speakers (whose names I must confess I don’t remember) all who received 20 minutes to speak about entheogens and (I presumed) ‘non-duality’.

Since my normal presentation (which is mostly about my theory for a quantum nature for the transpersonal entheogenic experience that I outline in my book ‘Tryptamine Palace: 5-MeO DMT and the Sonoran Desert Toad’) takes at least an hour, and since I was considering ‘non-duality’ to be another way of describing the ‘classical’ mystical experience of ‘transpersonal Oneness’ that occurs with the complete dissolution of Ego and Identity (‘the loss of all opposites’), I decided to talk about a subject that I had been thinking about more recently, namely the correlation between the effect a ‘drug’ has on the Ego (one’s personal sense of ‘I’) and its relative toxicity.

So for this conference, rather than discussing my usual subject (the endogenous entheogens, DMT and 5-MeO-DMT), I decided to consider the broad spectrum of different ‘mood-enhancing’ compounds available, and rather than considering how each particular ‘drug’ affects our bodies or our ‘mental well-being’ as most scientific studies would, I would instead rank each drug on how it affected our sense of Ego, our sense of “I”. Since the total loss of Ego and the sense of “I” is the core of the transpersonal mystical experience (and I am an experiential-mystic at heart) I decided that I would assign each ’drug’ its own ‘Mystical Value’, with the ‘drugs’ that can induce the transpersonal state of total loss of Ego and Identity having the highest value (most value to an experiential mystic), while the ‘drugs’ that reinforced or inflated the sense of the Ego would have the lowest. After having ranked the various compounds (according to experiential reports in literature, EROWID, etc), it was interesting to note that the scale naturally descended by the chemical class of the compound—tryptamine, phenethylamine, opiates, amphetamines, alcohol— and that this corresponded to a noticeable increase in toxicity.

Here is how I ranked the various compounds, along with my personal commentary on the effects of the compound, its toxicity, and human history.

The Oroc Mystical Value Scale

The endogenous entheogens/ Simple tryptamines:

1. 5-Methoxy-DMT: Regularly capable of inducing a ‘classical’ mystical experience of transpersonal oneness with complete dissolution of Ego and Identity, even at dosages as low as 5 micrograms. Endogenous. Which means that it is naturally produced within our own bodies and thus 100% physically ‘non-toxic’. Also present in nature in the leaf, bark, and roots of trees, and in the venom of the Bufo Alvarius toad. 5-MeO-DMT has been used in South America in the forms of snuffs for an estimated 3000 years. 5-MeO-DMT’s modern use, first in the form of smoking toad venom, and then as synthesized 5-Meo-DMT, is approx 35 years old.

2. DMT (dimethyltryptamine): Capable of inducing a ‘classical’ mystical experience of transpersonal Oneness, with complete dissolution of Ego and Identity, mostly at high dosages, and in certain individuals. Endogenous. Found in the leaf, seeds, bark, and roots of plants, DMT has been used in South America as snuffs, and as the active alkaloid in ayahuasca, for more than 1500 years. These plant admixtures are regarded as sacred medicines amongst the Amazonian cultures from which they originate. After being discovered to be psychologically active by the Hungarian psychologist Stephan Szara in 1957, DMT was used by IM sporadically throughout the early 1960’s (most notably by William S Burroughs and Timothy Leary) before experiencing a brief burst of popularity in the late 1960’s (after the underground chemist Nick Sand discovered that the fumurate was smokable), before disappearing almost completely by the end of the 1970’s. The writings of Terence McKenna subsequently rekindled interest in the compound and its natural analogue ayahuasca, which combined with the unsubstantiated theories of Dr Rick Strassman presented in the more recent book DMT: The Spirit Molecule, has resulted in a significant modern mythology amongst the current psychedelic counter-culture.

The Complex Tryptamines:

3. LSD-25. (lysergic acid) Also a tryptamine, LSD is capable of inducing a ‘classical’ mystical experience of transpersonal Oneness, with complete dissolution of Ego and Identity, in high dosages, and in certain individuals. Synthetic, with close analogues found in nature. The Eleusinian mysteries—which could only be attended once in a lifetime—were considered the high point of Greek Society and ran for more than 2000 years, tremendously influencing Greek Philosophy and thus Western Thought. Kykeon, the entheogen at the heart of these mysteries, was most likely an LSD analogue produced from an ergot (grain) fungus. (The Temple at Eleusis was dedicated to Demeter, the Goddess of Wheat). LSD-like compounds have also been isolated from the Aztec ololiuqui (morning glory) seeds. Lysergic Acid –LSD 25, which captured the public imagination like no other entheogen in modern history during the late 1960’s and early 70’s– when an estimated 75 million people tried the drug – is the synthetic counterpart of these natural plant analogues. While the very high dosages (800+ micrograms) recommended by Leary, Metzner, and Alpert in ‘The Varieties of the Psychedelic Experience’ (1963) to induce a transpersonal-mystical experience ultimately proved to be more than most people liked to handle psychologically, LSD is physiologically one of the safest compounds known to man, since it requires the smallest known amount (1/10,000th of a gram) to be psychologically active, and is thus has an incredibly low toxicity to dosage. (You can ingest the same amount of cyanide, or even plutonium, and it will pass through your body with affecting you). Wikipedia reports a suspected fatal overdose (Kentucky, 1975) medical literature on LSD, which involved the IV injection of a ridiculously large amount of LSD (1/3rd of a gram … more than 3000 of today’s hits!) but notes ’most sources report that there are no known human cases of such an overdose’.

4. Psilocybin (4-OH-DMT). Can induce transpersonal-mystical experience in high dosage. Naturally occurring in some 200 mushroom species. The presumed entheogen in Terence McKenna’s ‘Stoned Ape’ theory. The least powerful of the tryptamines, psilocybin is of low toxicity although overdoses are reputedly possible on synthetic psilocybin, such as in the death of John Griggs, the leader of the notorious LSD-and-hashish cartel, The Brotherhood of Love, although none are reported on EROWID.

Ketamine/PCP

5. Ketamine/PCP: Capable of inducing a ‘classical’ mystical experience of transpersonal Oneness, with complete dissolution of Ego and Identity, mostly at high dosages, and in certain individuals. The only legal PCP analogue (estimated 5-10% the strength of PCP), Ketamine, which acts as a stimulant on the central nervous system, requires inclusion due to its impressive record for inducing mystical experiences in individuals (mostly by IM injection) and it could be argued that it deserves a higher ranking than the complex tryptamines. Since it is used as a medical anesthetic, it is considered physically very safe and overdoses are rare. While PCP was first synthesized in 1926, with an illegal street use that peaked in the mid-70’s, Ketamine’s illegal use as an entheogen (and increasingly as a party drug in small doses) is a relatively recent human development.

The Psychedelic-Phenethylamines:

6. Mescaline: Can induce transpersonal-mystical experience in high-dosages. Naturally occurring in various cactus species, mescaline is one of the oldest psychedelics known to man. The San Pedro cactus cults of Northern Peru are the longest known continuous shamanic tradition having existed for at least 3000 years, while there is evidence of peyote use in Mexico and North America dating back 5700 years. In these cultures, the mescaline-containing cacti were considered sacred medicine. Although very rare today, synthetic mescaline was the main subject of Aldous Huxley’s ‘The Doors of Perception’, which helped spark the 60’s psychedelic revolution. (Mescaline, Psilocybin, LSD, and DMT would be the 4 compounds listed in the introduction to Leary, Messner, and Alpert’s ‘The Psychedelic Experience’ in 1965.). Like most psychedelics, mescaline is physically non-toxic and non-addictive.

7. 2-CB, 2-CI: Structurally related to mescaline, both 2-CB and 2-CI can induce transpersonal-mystical experience in high-dosages. Synthetic phenethylamines, these are notoriously dose-sensitive and little is known about their toxicity, but due to the extremely low toxicity of mescaline and virtually all psychedelics, they can be assumed to be physically non-toxic and non-addictive. Both are creations of Alexander Shulgin (most famous for popularizing MDMA), which rose to popularity in the LSD drought of the early 21st century caused by the infamous Kansas Silo bust, proving once again that prohibition simply results in diversity.

FATAL OVERDOSE LINE

The Empathagenic-Phenethylamines:

8. MDA: (Sassafras). Empathogen. The original 1960’s ‘Love Drug’. As with all the compounds in this class, empathogens can decrease the effect of Ego by inducing love and compassion to others, weakening the sense of ‘I’. Empathogens also differ from psychedelic/entheogens in their acute toxicity, with deaths caused by cardiac arrest/brain hemorrhaging at a fatality rate of approx 2 in 100,000 users, approximately the same as the more popular (though less toxic) MDMA.

9. MDMA (Ecstasy). See MDA. Rediscovered and popularized by chemist Alexander Shulgin in the 1980’s, MDMA held great promise for psychiatry before becoming illegal in a wave of Federal paranoia. Currently being used in hospital trials in Israel, the organization MAPS (Multi-disciplinary Association of Psychedelic Sciences) wants to start clinical trials on returning soldiers with post-traumatic stress syndrome here in the USA.

Other Popular Illegal Compounds:

10. THC (Cannabis or ‘marijuana’). Decreases the effect of the Ego by shifting perspective, often towards the humorous side. Relatively low toxicity, no possibility of physical overdose. While cannabis related crimes are the number one reason for incarceration in the USA, with over a million people in jail for its sale, distribution, production, or possession, there has never been a single death related to THC consumption itself.

11. Opiates/Heroin: Nullifies the Ego by negating all desire although not the sense of “I”. Highly physically addictive with regular fatal overdoses, heroin was involved in 213,118 Emergency Room (ED) visits in 2009. Meanwhile Oxycodon fatalities (OxyContin is a semi-synthetic opiod pain reliever derived from opium) have increased 66.7% over the last five years due to this pain-medicines relatively high toxicity. (14,459 in 2007 … 82,724 people died from FDA approved drugs in 2010.) ED visits involving nonmedical use of pharmaceuticals (either alone or in combination with another drug) increased 98.4 percent between 2004 and 2009, from 627,291 visits to 1,244,679. OxyContin sales currently exceed $4 billion per year.

12. Cocaine: The ultimate ‘Me’ drug. Physically and psychologically addictive. Highly toxic. A nervous-system stimulant, cocaine dependence (addiction) can result in cardiovascular and brain damage. The Greed Culture of the 1980’s that came only 15 years after the ‘Psychedelic Revolution’ can almost be epitomized by its reverence to cocaine, the most expensive drug that does the least for the shortest amount of time. In 2009 Cocaine and crack cocaine overdoses were responsible for over 400 000 ED room visits in US hospitals. While the first ‘cocaine epidemic’ in the USA was in the 1880’s, cocaine has greatly grown in popularity since the 1970’s, with the estimated U.S. cocaine market exceeding $70 billion in street value in 2005 – a greater revenue than a corporation such as Starbucks. The multi-billion dollar ‘War against Cocaine’ has been waged at the military level in foreign countries since the 1980’s with no noticeable affect on supply, while drug violence long the border of Mexico – mostly over the cocaine and methamphetamine trade – is killing more than 5000 people a year.

13. Methamphetamines. Physically and psychologically addictive. Highly toxic. The highly lucrative illegal underground market of the USA’s most-popular legal drug (Ritalin and Adderall are legal methamphetamines – the USA consumes 85% of the world’s prescription speed.) Sometimes called ‘white-trash cocaine’, methamphetamine abuse is reaching epidemic proportions at many levels of American society with over 93,000 ED room visits in 2009. Crack cocaine and methamphetamine addiction have long been associated with both forced and voluntary prostitution in every country that they appear in, while the violence associated with Mexican drug cartels fighting for control of a cocaine and methamphetamine market valued in excess of 50 billion dollars is currently responsible for over 15,000 fatalities a year.

( And finally, our Society’s chosen legal ‘inebrient’)

14. Alcohol: Considered a psychoactive depressant. Highly toxic and physically addictive. The United States Center for Disease Control estimates that medium to high consumption of alcohol leads to the death of approx 75,000 people a year in the USA. While the last three compounds on this chart – Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and Alcohol – are the only three compounds most likely to reinforce the Ego to the point of physical violence, alcohol is the one your most likely to do yourself physical harm on due to self-loathing. Alcohol is the most common extenuating factor for homicides, rapes, beatings, and suicides, not to mention vehicular fatalities. Alcohol is arguably the least sophisticated drug in both its production and its crude inebriating effects. The first alcoholic beverages can be traced back 9000 years to Neolithic times, which is why I like to call it our ‘stone-age drug’. Paradoxically, (or perhaps because of its ancient origins) alcohol it is the only 100% legal drug on this list in the vast majority of countries around the world.

My conclusion from ranking these various compounds by their unique ‘Mystical Value’ and comparing their relative toxicity can thus be expressed quite simply (as):

Oroc’s Law: The more a compound disrupts the Ego (the sense of ‘I’), the physically safer (less toxic) that compound will be, while the more a ‘drug’ reinforces and inflates the sense of Ego, the more physically harmful (toxic) that compound will be.

After my presentation a number of the enthusiastic audience asked me if I had ever written anything about this ‘Mystical Value Scale’ and I had to confess that I had not, but that some time in the future I would try to. But in all truth, I would probably have stored it away in the back drawers of my very messy mind had not the former ‘Chief Advisor on Drugs’ to the British Government published a very interesting report in the respected Lancet medical journal that was released just a month later (Nov 2010) and made world-wide news. In this report by the ‘Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs’, every common drug in British society was scored by a panel of social health experts on the harm it created including mental and physical damage, addiction, crime and costs to the economy and the community, thus basically ranking the public health effect of the various drugs. The maximum harm score was 100 and the minimum zero. When the results were tabulated, the most harmful drug was alcohol (72), then heroin (55), crack-cocaine (54), methamphetamines (33), cocaine (27), cannabis (20), ketamine (15), and MDMA (9), with LSD (7) and magic mushrooms (5) being ranked as the least harmful substances to British society! (Neither DMT or 5-MeO-DMT were on the list). The esteemed authors also wrote that ‘our findings lend support to the previous work in the UK and the Netherlands, confirming that the present drug classification systems have little relation to the evidence of harm.’

Based on this highly scientific report, my observation about the related toxicity of my Mystical Value scale would seem to have been validated, with those ‘drugs’ that most eradicate the effect of the Ego being deemed (by public health experts) the safest. Non-addictive and of low toxicity, psychedelic ‘drugs’ offer no threat to your physical health, and yet they are considered by our Society to be extremely ‘dangerous’ and are amongst the most illegal substances on the planet.

The word drug incidentally—which means (in this context, according to the Webster’s dictionary) ‘a chemical substance which enhances physical or mental well-being’— is a ridiculously misleading and almost meaningless word if you think about it, since nearly everything we eat and drink can be considered a drug. Nitrous oxide, a gas, is a drug. Coffee, tea, sugar, and chocolate are all drugs. Even McDonalds french-fries under this broad definition could be considered a (highly addictive) drug. Now, as much as I love chocolate, coffee, and even — I hate to admit it — the occasional McDonalds French-fry, I see little purpose in comparing them in any way, shape, or form, to LSD, DMT, or 5-MeO-DMT, which are far more likely to completely change your consensual reality then they are ‘enhance your physical or mental well-being’. But the very use of a word/term as broad as ‘drugs’ (drug law, drug war, illegal drugs, dangerous drugs etc’) to describe and legally regulate (DEA) such a ridiculously broad range of compounds is in it’s self a verbal smokescreen designed to help limit the distinctly society-changing possibilities of psychedelic-entheogens.

If I may diverge for a moment, it is my personal opinion that the ‘first’ psychedelic revolution in the United States (1963 – Saturday 6th December 1969) ‘failed’ ultimately due to the mass influx of a variety of distinctly non-psychedelic ‘drugs’ into the chaotic and highly exploratory youth culture of that time. Psychedelics when used in high-dosages have proven to be safest when used in a thoughtful and controlled ‘set-and-setting’, but as the Youth revolution took hold many teenagers were exposed to super-powerful entheogens like LSD-25 and STP (DOM) in what can only be described as a cavalier and Dionysian manner. Considering the fact that an average hit of LSD in 1968 (400-500mg) was 5 times stronger than a hit of street acid (80 to 100mg) today, and that first-timers LSD users were frequently encouraged to take two hits if they wanted to see Tim Leary’s promised ‘white light’, with little thought to their ‘set-and setting’, then it is easy to see how a large number of young hippies feared acid as much as others revered it. (You still witness this same phenomena today … many of the 20 something’s that I talk to at festivals seem to love DMT but are terrified of LSD having already experienced a trip too long and arduous for them … and they probably ate a quarter of what their parents did for their first time in the 60’s!). This tendency to push all experiences to the limit (‘the Prankster ethic’) opened the backdoor for the more seductive and much easier rides of first heroin, and then cocaine. (Which when it was first introduced was not thought to be addictive.)

Disregarding the potential (and well-documented role) that the CIA played in the introduction and distribution of virtually all the illegal drugs that became available, by failing to recognize the essential difference of psychedelics/entheogens—that they are best used carefully in a sacred manner with trusted guides and not wildly in recreation amongst crowds of strangers—and then by lumping the wide-variety of compounds that followed into a singular ‘Drug Culture’ that fails to distinguish between the wide variety of experiences that this vast family of so-called ‘drugs’ can produce, the Alternative culture that had been inspired by psychedelics and the chance for change, ended up settling for uppers-and-downers and the Status Quo, as heroin, cocaine, and amphetamines became the most popular ‘illegal drugs’ of the last thirty years of the 20th century. (And the use and abuse of legal ‘prescription drugs’ sky rocketed).

It is interesting now —with more than 40 years perspective— to realize the fact that our Society’s so-called ‘Drug Culture’ has increasingly turned away from the 60’s psychedelic ethos of the mystical destruction of the Ego (and consequently the social structures that the Ego creates) towards a range of compounds that actually reinforce the concept of the Ego (and thus maintain the existing social structures that Ego has built). It could be argued that the last thirty years of the twentieth century that came after the failed psychedelic revolution of the 1960’s were the most egocentric years in human history, as television and a global communication network have relentlessly promoted the cult of the Ego as the highest human ideal to the post Vietnam generations of techno-capitalists, with the constant accumulation of individual wealth and power seen as a Darwinian function inherited from our hunter-gatherer days. This obsession with the role of the Individual has resulted in 5% of the world’s population now controlling 50% of its wealth, as multi-national corporations controlled by a handful of families continue to strip the globe of its resources to line the pockets of shareholders and board members in those industrialized nations whose military are effectively the World Law, a treacherous and seemingly unstoppable situation that is threatening life on this planet as the military-industrial complex lurches increasingly erratically through the last of its days. The cult of the Individual Ego has now grown so predominant, we have a societal case of what I call ‘extinction denial’ where the fate of the individual has become paramount, best expressed in the concept ‘You better get yours while you can.’

A radical reassessment of the effect of capitalism and consumerism on both the human condition and our planet is clearly required, but what can bring about a change in a viewpoint that has been steadily being programmed into us by the very technology whose reckless use we need to reassess? According to the Dalai Lama ‘achieving genuine happiness may require bringing about a transformation in your outlook, in your way of thinking, and this is not a simple matter’ and I believe this applies to us as much as a Society as it does to each of us individually. But what can any of us really do other than reorganize deck chairs on the Titanic? What action can actually have a chance of bringing about a fundamental transformation in the way Humanity perceives and values Life on this planet?

In July of 2003 when first introduced to the super-entheogen 5-MeO-DMT, I underwent what I now believe to be a ‘classical’ mystical experience of transpersonal unity with the Source of Being. This event had a profound effect upon my world-view since I found myself changed from an agnostic scientific-rationalist to believing in the existence of a God far greater than I could have ever imagined, all in the space of a single 40 minute drug-induced ‘trip’. The result for my subsequent search for answers on how such a radical transformation could have occurred is contained in my book “Tryptamine Palace: 5-MeO-DMT and the Sonoran Desert Toad.” (Park Street Press, 2009), and within the pages of that book I make the claim that this discovery of a spiritual element to the Universe, and the realization that God not only CAN exist but exists —as the mystics have always insisted—as a part of you, is the most exciting realization that a human being can make. More than eight years have now past since I myself made that unexpected discovery, and while I still agree that is ultimately the most exciting discovery possible, I must concede it is not always the most practical, a dilemma that mystics have known and have suffered for since the beginning of time. The personal discovery of God—any kind of God or Buddha-State, for they are all streams of the same Cosmic river—can never be ‘scientifically’ proven and inevitably any entheogenic realizations or enlightenment can only offer the same proofs as any other ‘spiritual’ system … the sticky dual-problem of personal testimony and ‘faith’.

I have however come to realize that while entheogens can never ‘prove’ the existence of God (rather one can only ‘experience’ God-Consciousness through the use of them and thus form your own opinion), true-entheogens can be used as the most powerful tools of exploration available for investigating some of the most perplexing philosophical questions that humanity has managed to conceive, especially those concerning the role and reality of Consciousness, and its human-shadow, the Ego. As our Society and technology begins to progress beyond the Newtonian-Darwinian paradigm, we are coming to scientifically realize that nothing in the Universe exists as an individual point in space-and-time, since the emerging quantum view of the Universe states that all things are linked and connected thru a matrix of fields of energy that far surpass the energy of physical matter, matter is merely the froth on the wave of reality if you like, while our consciousness, the vehicle of this discovery, far from being an accidental by-product of chemical reactions produced within the matter of the brain as purported by the old paradigm, increasingly seems to be a part of an infinite field of consciousness that both permeates, and creates, the Universe itself. I can also personally testify that thru the use of entheogens one can actually experience a moment outside of time and space as pure Consciousness, with no idea or memory of who you are or where you came from, and in that instant the realization arises of the interconnectedness of all things, that all is truly One—the transpersonal experience as Stanislav Grof calls it—and that this is quite possibly the most profound human experience available, a speculation that the recorded history of all varieties of mysticism would seem to support.

Which brings about the about the very interesting possibility—as suggested by the psychologist Julian Jaynes in his increasingly influential book ‘The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind’—that the modern highly-individualized human Ego that has been so venerated in the 19th and 20th centuries may be a comparatively recent development in both human history (and perhaps the history of the Universe), and that ‘the voice in our head’ that we now all constantly hear, a few thousand years ago would only arise only in times of severe crisis and danger. (And was often thought to be the voice of the Gods). The non-denominational spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle in his modern classic ‘A New Earth’ argues that our highly refined sense of ‘I’ has come from the development of our technology-driven Society, since the narrowing of our mental focus away from the transpersonal has allowed us to develop our fantastic technology, but at the expense of disconnecting us with another deeper layer of consciousness that we share with all other things in the Universe. We can no longer see the woods for the trees so to speak, as we have become prisoners of our own inflated sense of self.

As our scientists start to discover the outer realms of Quantum Consciousness, and our psychologists and spiritual masters begin to return our attention to the idea of a Cosmic or Absolute Consciousness that both unites and transcends all religion, with the role that the Individual Ego plays in our Society coming under increasingly critical scrutiny, then it would seem clear the lesson that the careful use of entheogens can teach virtually any of us. It is a scientifically verifiable fact that entheogenic compounds can cause a human ego to be disrupted or even momentarily wiped away, and that when this happens, to paraphrase the poetic words of William Blake, the doors of perception are cleansed, and all things appear to man as they are, Infinite. Throughout the recorded history of Humanity there has been no experience considered more profound or more valuable then the singular realization that All is indeed One, and now as the scientists have begun to catch up with the mystics on realizing the simple undeniable fact that all systems are linked, and that the very idea of the ‘sacredness of the individual’ is somewhat absurd, we now need to reform our governments, our religions, our financial institutions, our schools, and most importantly ourselves, to this fundamental Universal Truth.

In a world where we have been programmed by the constant sounds and flashy moving images of our rapidly developing modern technology since we have been born, the ancient schools of meditation and contemplation have had little chance to reform the Ego or the society that our love of technology—the human child of the Ego—has built for us, since we have long since forgotten that the death of the Ego is a desirable goal. Deepak Chopra once wrote that synchronicity is the universe showing its intention, and therefore I do not find it strange that mescaline was first synthesized the year that Röntgen discovered radiation, or that Albert Hofmann had a strange dream to reinvestigate a compound that he had put on a shelf many years earlier, thereby instigating a chain of events that would cause him to discover LSD-25’s remarkable psychoactive qualities while the Manhattan Project was months away from igniting the world’s first atomic bomb, arguably humanity’s most egocentric invention. Lysergic Acid (LSD) is a remarkable 20th century invention in the fact that it is the only entheogen that a competent chemist can make a million hits of in an afternoon, and its mass-production qualities (for a mass-production society) should not be under-valued, since it has been responsible for reintroducing the mystical/shamanic concept of the death-and-rebirth of the Ego into our Society at a time when it is most desperately needed. An entheogenic moment outside of space of time can cause a lifetime of egocentric programming to come tumbling down like a house of cards, an illumination almost impossible to ignore, and it is for exactly this reason that our Governments so fear them. If we build the foundations of the Entheogenic Revolution —the 2nd Psychedelic Revolution— upon the basis of a constant awareness of the influence of the Ego, and seek out a deeper connection with the Mind of the Universe that we all share in a process of ‘liberation theology’, then we have a chance to rebuild our tribes into a true World Family that will find a way through the troubling times to come. For if there is one thing that is for sure, it is that none of us will make it alone.

Finding the true purpose and meaning of Yoga has never been as important as it is today, with toxicity and harmful frequencies flowing through the veins of our so called modern lifestyle.

Stuck in between meeting our daily nutritional requirements and maintaining some sort of healthy homeostasis so one can avoid doctors and pharmaceutical drugs, our lives are so consumed by this fast paced, over burdening lifestyle that we have little or no time to dwell deeply on finding our true purpose of being here.

Yoga is more than doing Asanas for physical strength and flexibility. It is the opening of a deep inner dialogue between the self and universal consciousness ... a re-connection with the source of all as some might say.

"The traditional purpose of Yoga, however, has always been to bring about a profound transformation in the person through the transcendence of the ego."

As per the Yoga Sutras, the purpose of Yoga is to gain control over one's own mind or consciousness. In other words, it helps us break free from repetitive patterns of the Ego which keep our true self (the Atman or the Soul) from emerging !

"Yogaschitta vritti nirodhah" [ Yoga Sutras 1.2 ]

Yoga means "Union" and its purpose is to integrate all aspects of consciousness ... the body, mind and soul. There are many different forms of Yoga practices such as Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Asthanga Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga ... The following documentary film called "Enlighten Up" takes us on a journey to understand Yoga and its spiritual interjections from a skeptic's view point, deeply rooted in the modern, scientific, evidence based paradigm.

Featuring: B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, Norman Allen, Sharon Gannon, David Life, Gurmukh, Dharma Mitra, Cyndi Lee, Alan Finger, Rodney Yee, Beryl Bender Birch, Shyamdas, Diamond Dallas Page and many more!

The central character from the film, Nick Rosen says he remained unchanged as a person in spite of his rigorous Yoga regime and experiences meeting other yoga masters and practitioners. He adds on saying that his experience is in no way a true reflection of what Yoga stands for. Quite rightly said, an accelerated course in understanding the self in context to the Yogic tradition is always going to be a challenge especially when one approaches it from a skeptical perspective trying to figure it all out in short span of time.

The 4 different paths of Yoga

1. Karma Yoga - the path of selfless service.

" Thy right is to work only, but never with its fruits; let the fruits of action be not thy motive, nor let thy attachment be to inaction." [Bhagavad Gita 2.47]

2. Bhakti Yoga - the path of devotion.

"Whoever offers me with devotion - a leaf, a flower, a fruit or a little water - that, so offered devotedly by the pure-minded, I accept." [Bhagavad Gita 9.26]

3. Jnana Yoga - the path of knowledge.

"But he who knows the Truth, O mighty armed (Arjuna) about the division of the qualities and (their) functions, knowing that the Gunas as senses move amidst the Gunas as the sense-objects is not attached." [ Bhagavad Gita 3.28 ]

4. Raja Yoga - the path of controlling the mind.

"Little by little let him attain to quietude by the intellect held firmly; having made the mind establish itself in the Self let him not think of anything." [Bhagavad Gita 6.25]

Who can do Yoga?

Yuva vrddho'tivrddho va vyadhito durbalo'pi va

abhyasat siddhim apnoti sarvayogesvatandritah

Whether young, old or too old, sick or lean - one who discards laziness, succeeds if he practices yoga. [1.66 Hata yogapradipika]

Yoga may be practiced by everyone regardless of age, sex or physical abilities.

“Although yoga has its origins in ancient India, its methods and purposes are universal, relying not on cultural background, faith or deity, but simply on the individual. Yoga has become important in the lives of many contemporary Westerners, sometimes as a way of improving health and fitness of the body, but also as a means of personal and spiritual development.”

― Tara Fraser, Yoga For You

Modern yoga is based on five basic principles that were created by Swami Sivananda.
